Kids love it! To play, students work in groups and take turns flipping over a card.
You could even play a fun upbeat song in the background while students are moving around the room!Īnother fun game is Tic-Tac-Toe. These 3 students’ cards would make a match because they make a compound word. For example: one student has “dragon”, one student has “fly” and another student has “dragonfly”. Students “mix and move” around the room to find a friend who has the missing part to their compound word. This is a whole group game where each student gets one picture card. We played them ALL THE TIME in my classroom. Y’ALL! I love, love, love using games to teach new skills. I am sure there are many other ways to use them, too! word walls, abc order, writing center, syllable counting, spelling, matching games (make 2 copies), write the room, and read the room. They are helpful to ELL students and can be used in so many ways. Vocabulary Word Cards are always great to use, too when introducing a new skill. Tip: You can add magnetic tape to the back of the poster and display it on your whiteboard.
Anchor charts/posters are also great to use throughout a new unit for students to reference to if needed.
When introducing a new skill, I like to have some sort of anchor chart or poster to use. Before I jump in on sharing everything, I wanted to let you know that there are both printable and digital activities available for compound words. I recently released a new resource that I want to share with y’all: compound words activities. ġ00 Club (3) 100th day (1) Accelerated Reader (7) adjectives (3) Aims Web (1) all about me (15) assessment (4) awards (5) back to school (16) Back-to-Back (4) birthday (4) blog (7) blog etiquette (2) books for boys (1) Brag Tags (4) Bucket Fillers (8) bulletin board (4) CAFE (11) calendar routine (2) cause and effect (2) chair pockets (1) character traits (7) Christmas (21) Christmas Around the World (15) Class Dojo (2) class jobs (3) class website (2) classroom jobs (1) classroom library (3) classroom management (15) classroom organization (5) classroom pet (4) classroom photos (28) classroom theme (2) clip chart (5) Common Core (12) Daily Five (20) daily schedule (3) data (3) departmentalizing (4) digital paper (2) Donor's Choose (6) Easter (3) ELA (2) End of the Year (7) Fabulous Feedback linky party (3) fairy tales (3) first day of school (3) fonts (4) fractions (4) freebie (196) giveaway (59) goal setting (3) grammar (12) graphic organizers (1) Groundhog's Day (2) guest blog (8) guided reading (8) Halloween (9) handwriting (2) holidays (2) homework (6) Homework Club (4) homophones (3) HORSE folders (1) inference (4) informational writing (4) interactive white board (2) interventions (2) iPad (3) landforms (3) Leap Day (2) learning beliefs (3) learning game (1) learning targets (1) lesson plans (1) library (1) linky party (44) Lunch Bunch (1) math (23) math workstations (17) matter (4) mini-lessons (1) money (2) morning meeting (5) newsletter (5) Nook (3) nouns (4) Open House (5) oral reading fluency (11) organization (4) Pinterest (3) predicting (4) pumpkins (2) read to someone (4) reading (5) reading aloud (3) reading comprehension (29) reading month (2) reading response journal (12) RTI (2) science (5) SCOOT (2) seat sacks (1) Snazzy Snack (2) snowflakes (3) somebody-wanted-but-so (2) spelling (12) split classes (1) spring (2) St.Hey, hey!
